Introduction to families
Dear Family I am a 64 year old single lady. Just completed caring for a 77 year old client who went into a nursing home end of January. Am now available. I have much experience with working with children. Part of my studies at Uni of Pretoria was developmental stages from birth to 65 years, and in my basic nursing course one of the modules was developmental stages of children birth to 17 years. I have experience working with children through their various stages. I owned an art shop and ran art and craft classes for children and adults in Kloof at the Craft Corner. I taught Monday to Saturday and ran the Holiday club during the holidays, for under 11 and one for 11-19 years. I also had a class for a 7 year old who had anxiety issues and was diagnosed with ADHD. I worked with high schoolers when I worked at Greendale Hospice (HospiceWits). I worked with Community Hours, an initiative to help the high schoolers achieve their community hours through volunteering at the Hospice events. I looked after 3 children in 2023, for 5 weeks while their parents were overseas on business. 3-4-6 year old. Did the morning school run, after school activities, entertainment, church on Sunday, swimming lessons etc. assumed complete responsibility for the children on a 24/7 basis. I have also been a children's church teacher to 3-4 and 5-6 year olds in my previous church in Sandton called Rivers church and briefly before Covid at City Hill church in Hillcrest. I often had up to 13 children in a craft class and it was my responsibility to make all the kids work well together at the same time to have fun. I have a GreatAuPair profile as a Care Giver to seniors. I have in the past done care giving for the Hospice in Johannesburg and I am compassionate and patient. I studied as a Healthcare Assistant and worked 4 months in a private hospital, 5 weeks working in the Pediatrics ward. I have CPR and First Aid training. Also did a one day workshop for - Caring for a person with Diabetes. I have also completed a one year Christian Counselling course through the University of Pretoria. My CV and references are available on request.
I have always loved working with children. In my art and craft classes it helped to very quickly ascertain the different personalities that are in the room, and at the same time make all the kids work well together while having fun. I had to look out for the noisy ones, the quiet ones, the shy ones, the hyper ones and I had to make the 2.5 hours work well so that all the kids had an enjoyable experience. I am a great believer in communication and conversation and love having chats with the children. This breaks the ice and without the kids being disrespectful they see me as a friend. I believe every child has something/s they are good at and I try to capitilise on that and to show them that even though they are young, they have talent and value.
I sketch with pencil and paint in watercolour. I write poetry and short stories. I am a member of Hiking Getaways. I enjoy crosswords and puzzles. I enjoy the occasional park run. I read a great deal. I do arts and crafts. *** NB: Afrikaans is not my first language and I am about 70% proficient in the language and am striving to improve my fluency***

Auntie Penny was amazing with our kids—truly like family! She handled all tasks flawlessly and went above and beyond by taking them to the park and library. We cherish the memories she created with us. My kids still asks for her and she will be an absolute blessings to the family that gets to work with her.

Penny has been a very reliable, caring and hard-working carer for my father in the last year. He hired her initially in January 2024 to take care of the house, cooking diabetic-appropriate food, shopping and driving him around, checking his blood sugar levels and blood pressure and managing his medication. She kept the house very neat and clean, cooked delicious food, drove him around safely and kept a close eye on his vital signs. In September my father suffered a severe brain bleed and was suddenly left bedridden and cognitively impaired. She accompanied him daily through his long hospital stay and continued to care for him when he returned home. Since his condition had significantly deteriorated her tasks were widely extended to dressing, washing and grooming him (including diaper changes), moving him around the house (with the help of a second carer), physically feeding him, administering insulin injections several times a day, stimulating him with conversation and exercises, changing his sleeping position during the night to avoid bed sores, as well as staying in close contact with his doctors and family. Penelope has always brought a professional, thoughtful and organized approach to the care of my father; and we could always be rest assured that he is was in excellent hands. She had our full trust and kept us updated on his condition and communicated with us in a kind, clear and precise manner. She is very hardworking, reliable and thorough in her job and was always committed to do her best. We have ended the current employment with Penelope per 30.04.2025 as we decided to move my father to a care home. Although she looked after him most excellently, we decided for a care home as this was financially more feasible for us than the private care at home. We highly recommend Penelope for anyone needing a carer and really wish her all the best for her future. If you require any more information then you may gladly contact me. I am sure she will give her best in your home, as she always did for my father. Best wishes, Tessa Neumann tessa@icarusfeather.com
