AJ has Down Syndrome and Autism. He requires someone with patience and empathy. My mum, 76, is a stroke survivor and requires someone to keep an eye on her to make sure she is drinking water and having lunch. Although AJ is verbal, he won’t communicate his needs to you. He is scared of dogs barking, the hadeda calls, walking up stairs, any heights, strange environments, and a lot more. Making coffee for gran and making sure she has fresh water. Changing AJ’s soiled diapers as and when required. Not waiting for AJ to tell them that he has a wet/souled diaper (very rarely happens). Knowing when AJ needs to see a doctor will require intuition and some idea of warning signs of pneumonia, wound care and healing, treatment of nappy rashes or other infections. He is in adult diapers and changing of diapers is required. The person will need to understand some things about DS and Autism and be willing and able to learn. AJ has his own language and it takes time to understand him. Patience and understanding are key.
