Dear Family: I am Andile M, I am 26 years old, I stay in Durban near gateway, at uMhlanga Ridge. I absolutely love the beach, my family and I enjoy going there, whether to have a braai, picnics or even have a jog. We’re a family of 9, yes! We’re a huge family and I have been fortunate to take care of my two younger brothers, one was given his second name by me because I have been asking my mom to get me a younger sibling that I could play with since I used to spend hours at my neighbours house playing with the little babies there. It used to hurt me when I had to go back home, hence I had the privilege to name my brother! He has a mental disability that is not diagnosed and I still take care of him till today, I feed him, prepare his meals, change his nappy, take him out for walks and drive him around since he enjoys being in a moving car, also give him a bath and do his laundry. He is now 20 years old and this is something I still do, I also used to do the same when he was still attending school. I also joined a NGO near where I stay where there is an organisation that is more of an after school care. I help prepare healthy or nutritious meals for children, help them with their homework, teach them a few sports that I know and then we play games. I also help take care of my nieces and nephews, I enjoy taking them out and sharing folktales with them. Taking care of children is one of the best things that I am able to do. Why I would make the perfect au pair

I would make a perfect Au pair because I have been an aupair before in the United States of America for two years. I just came back last year (2023) in September, I took care of a 6 year old girl and a 2 year old boy, I used to juggle online school with the girl while taking care of a naughty toddler especially during a pandemic, this was very stressful but with great support from my host parents everything seemed like a walk in the park. I have just gone back again to the same family in 2022. Going to University and learning more about child development also ignited a bigger spark into understanding and learning more about children. I enjoy how children are so adventurous, and I believe I can keep up since I’m active. I always come up with great educational activities or activities that promote good developmental skills and fun ways to kill time and burn some of that energy. I am a responsible, mature young adult who likes to live life to fullest and give it the best I can whenever I can!

Job description

I had to help get the girl ready for school then stand at the gate with her while we wait for the bus to pick her up. I get back and prepare breakfast for the toddler and I, he then watches his favourite show, he eventually takes his nap. So I get time to do laundry, tidy up or clean the dishes and so forth. I wake him up if I need to, take him out for a walk or go to the mall or the park with him or I teach him the alphabets and other things related to that, we get back and we wait for the girl to return from school. I check her school bag when she returns then I prepare something for her to eat or to snack, we then begin with homework after that we all play or do something together and later on I tidy up and clean the dishes. Otherwise. If the girl is not at school, I do online classes with her and we just get busy with school almost the entire day.

Andile is a fun open minded person to be around. We we had a great year together since she was part of our family, taking care of my 6 year old daughter and 2 year old son, our focus was that she assists my daughter with school. She was excellent! She came with exciting, easier and more interactive ways for my daughter to pay more attention in her online classes as well as doing her homework and not feeling like schoolwork is a punishment. She was responsible (especially also during the COVID-19 restrictions), pro-active, reliable and very dedicated. I was able to count on her without having to let her know each and everything that she needs to do. We lived happily together, she also taught our family a lot about her culture since that was part of the program. She was very helpful in assisting our daughter with learning how to read and write. Not to mention that she also never took her eyes off from my very naughty toddler. She also helped around the house with tiding up, washing dishes and preparing dinner at times making our lives very simple.
