Introduction to families
Dear Family I’m a twenty-three-year-old female currently living in South Africa. I come from a stable home where I have developed the values of honesty, integrity and hard work whilst remaining open-minded, non-judgmental and flexible when it comes to the choices and behaviours of others. I am highly self-disciplined when it comes to being on time and getting the task done. One of my strengths is organizing. I grew up on a small holding, about 30km from Alberton. As the youngest of three siblings I learnt the artful skill of negation and to stand up for myself. Nevertheless we are a close knit family choosing to spend all our holidays together doing outdoor and adventure based activities. I attended public school (Brackenhurst Primary and Alberton High) where I participated extensively in extra mural activities such as the Cultural Eisteddfods which encompassed public speaking, drama and art. I also participated in many sports such as first team hockey, cricket and softball. I have been involved in dancing since I was young. I studied BCom Marketing Management at the University of Pretoria South Africa. During this time I had the privilege of living in a university residence, House Nerina. My go-getter attitude and team spirit enabled me to get involved in a variety of residence activities. Having leadership experience and people skills, I often took on leadership roles in organising events. I was 1 of 10 out of 300 ladies elected as an Executive House Committee Member. This responsibility taught me the importance of time management skills, working in teams and coping well under pressure. My creative and artistic background helped me head the Culture and Social portfolio which included tasks such as managing teams, organising, problem solving and the choreography of many dancing and singing completions, in which we succeeded. Living in a residence, away from home, I learnt how to become independent and autonomous. It taught me how to live away from family and friends for long periods of time and the importance of getting along with the people sharing the space around me. After graduating at the end of 2019, I had work plans that were about to be realized when Covid hit. I was lucky enough to be able to organise work doing the marketing and branding for a member of our local community. Together with this I also tutored some of the local children as they were being home-school during lockdown. After my work responsibilities I studied and completed my TEFL [Teaching English in a Foreign Language] course, where a large focus was on teaching children one-on-one and understanding child and learning behaviour. This was not difficult as I had previous experience teaching and coordinating large groups of unruly Sunday school kids. During the Covid-lockdown I took on the majority household responsibilities including cooking, as both my parents were essential workers, but this was nothing new as we had grown up earning our own pocket money by doing chores around the house and taking care of the various animals on the small holding. We all gained some weight during lockdown due to my extensive baking as well as a chocolate brownie recipe that will wreck anyone’s diet and would be more than happy to cook for your family too.
I enjoy working with children especially in terms of their all-round development not just academics. I have spent many years looking after and educating children and have learnt that they have so much to teach us too. For many years I assisted my mom (an occupational therapist) with school readiness testing and learnt a lot about child development and children with learning difficulties. This year I taught grade 6 maths (due to lockdown of their school) where I learnt the artful skill of being patient and how to make a very boring topic fun and something to be excited about.
I love spending time in the kitchen cooking and baking for others (I think feeding loved ones is my love language.) I have always enjoyed the arts whether it be dancing acting or painting and have recently started getting into digital media. I enjoy spending time outside going for walks/hiking; paddling; swimming; fishing and camping. I love to dance and practice new dance routines to my favorite musicals. I would love the opportunity to be part of a like-minded family.
