Our business is looking after children, as my husband and I started an American-style Summer camp in Zinkwazi. My husband and I are still very involved with the company, and we need someone to help us look after our own kids. We are looking for a flexible all-rounder, someone male or female, who is keen to be both an Au-pair and a driver for our family and the company. You need to have an ability to bond with children of all ages and be passionate about helping each child reach their full potential. As we live far from school and towns, most of our personal and company errands are done in combination with school runs. You need to have a really good sense of direction, with at least three years driving experience (preferably five). You must have owned your own car and be happy to spend hours driving. You will not be using your own car while working, but I need to know that you have owned and driven a car of your own before. We are looking for someone who is excited to relocate to a remote coastal village, to communal accommodation, where not much happens other than surfing. It will not suit someone who is in a serious relationship or who has other family commitments.
If accepted, we may invite you to come for one weeks' trial as a camp counselor or to shadow the current au-pair. This is an ideal way for you to familiarize yourself with our family, the place, the people, and all the counselors (who will be the people with whom you will be living and socializing).
A general weeks tasks do change depending on what is required for that week. You will be responsible for:
- Lifting children to and from school and extra murals.
- Homework and study time with the boys (helping Cuan get better grades).
- Prepping and/or serving of some meals, feeding the dogs and chickens at times (but we have three other full time housekeepers who do most of food prep and animal care).
- Running errands in Stanger, Durban, Umhlali, Ballito, Salt Rock. (Grocery and general shopping for the family and fetching equipment and stock for camp). This takes up quite a bit of your time when the kids are at school.
- Spending quality time with the two younger boys, doing something fun and active, creative and educational.
- Attending play dates with other children.
We are looking for someone who is keen to work for at least a year, but preferably longer, as we would love you to become an integral part of our family - eventually joining us for holidays. Over the past twelve years we employed three different and wonderful Au-pairs, each one having stayed with us for between 1 and 3 years, with whom we are still in contact and whom we still regard as wonderful members of our family.
To get a good idea of what it would be like to live and work in Zinkwazi, and if you are under the age of 27, it would be a good idea to consider coming down to work as a counselor for a week at Sugar Bay. We can give you free transport from JHB and you can get to know the people and the place, meet my family and decide if this is the place for you. Please go onto the Sugar Bay website, download and submit a counselor application form and send it through to the head counselor. IF you are accepted, send me a mail to let me know when you are coming down. If you are older than 27 please note that we often have other managerial positions come available at the Resort which suit the more mature applicant eg: health centre manager/ receptionist/ PR manager etc.
